OnePlus 5 Rolled out in India: Here are the 5 Things You Need to Know before Purchasing

After much anticipation, OnePlus 5 finally rolled out into the Indian market.  The much-awaited series of OnePlus, OnePlus 5 have been launched with the Snapdragon 835 processor.  The smartphone can be purchased at pop-up events in Hyderabad, Chennai, and Bengaluru on Saturday.  If you are willing to buy OnePlus 5 either in offline or online mode, then you need to know few things about it.

OnePlus 5 comes pre-installed with a scratch guard

Similar to OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T, the OnePlus 5 comes pre-installed with a scratch guard.  The scratch guard would be of much help as there is no need to spend the extra penny on it, but for those who don’t want, it seems unnecessary.  It is completely baffling considering that the OnePlus 5 features 2.5D Corning Gorilla Glass 5.  The smartphone also comes with Dash Charger, SIM tray ejection pin, and a postcard from One Plus co-founder Carl Pei.

Comes with Full HD

Albeit many of the Android smartphones are upgrading from Full HD to QHD, OnePlus 5 still is using 1080×1920 pixels on the screen.  Unlike its competitors LG G6 and Samsung Galaxy S8, OnePlus 5 it does not look sharp and still sports same resolution as its predecessors.

Lacks the ability of waterproofing

Unlike most of the smartphones of the present time, OnePlus 5 does not support waterproofing or dust resistance.  It does not even come with an IP68 certification like Samsung Galaxy S8, but it comes with the slimmer look of 7.25mm.

Dash Charger

The dash charger that was given with OnePlus 3 and 3T works with OnePlus 5 as well.  The dash charger has quick charging technology.  However, the charger is boxier and bulkier than its predecessors.  The charger looks so much similar to iPad charger.

OnePlus 5 Camera

For those who love thin phones, OnePlus 5 is the best choice.  OnePlus 5 features a camera bump.  It sports 16-megapixel main camera with the 20-megapixel telephoto camera.  The camera allows portraits shots and clearer zoom.  Much like iPhone 7 Plus, LG G6, and Huawei P10, the OnePlus 5 is capable of taking bokeh shots.  The video mode in OnePlus 5 lacks compared to its predecessor OnePlus 3T with just 4K recording.

OnePlus 5 has been launched in India at a price of Rs. 32, 999 and is available for sale both in online and offline.

5 Appliances That Burn Energy Even When They’re Turned Off

Did you know that home appliances can lead a “secret” life and continue working even when you’ve pushed the power button?

Creative Idea 365 did some research and found out which devices are especially mischievous and go on wasting energy even after they’re turned off.

A charger without a phone

A charger left in the socket goes on using up energy even when there’s no device connected to it. The power is minimal, though, so it doesn’t hit our wallet too much.

A digital TV tuner

TV tuners continue working after you turn them off and waste up to $22 worth of energy a year.

Most of us don’t even bother switching our tuners to standby mode, thinking that turning off the TV is enough. This results in 5 times the cost.

You did know that pushing the power button sends the TV to standby mode, not turn it off, didn’t you? This consumes about $25 worth of energy a year.

PCs and laptops

Even turned off, PCs and laptops go on working. That’s why when you unplug them, you can save up to $100 per year.

Those who leave their machines in standby mode can multiply this amount by 1.5.

Devices with a timer

Such a little-noticed detail as a working timer can tell you the device is still on. By unplugging such an appliance, you save up to $114 a year.

Should you unplug them?

Some may think the above sums are small, while others would be impressed.

In any case, unplugging devices is still worth it: an unforeseen power surge may leave you penniless with a whole house of burned appliances.

Kamil Kotarba Explores the Lack of Human Interaction in the Digital Age

In the series ‘Hide And Seek’, photographer Kamil Kotarba reflects on how the rise of mobile screens negatively influences the way we connect and interact with others.

His photographs capture daily scenes, such as a dinner for two and an evening on the couch, yet only show arms attached to mobile phones without the bodies.

On the inspiration behind the series, Kotarba says: “A virtual world always competes with a real world. Instead of focusing on interaction with other people, we prefer to stare at a small mobile screen which constantly offers us new incentives. The incentives which we choose without any restrictions of space and time in which we are currently in. Thanks to this diversity, this form of activity seems to be far more interesting than what we are doing. Maybe it’s really more interesting? Although we are still in a real space, it seems like we aren’t there.

The real life happening around just eludes us. We are somewhere ‘in between’. We don’t bother being. We choose the lack of participation. At the same time we are online – still in touch with our friends. We hide behind mobile screens. We play hide and seek.”

Nokia has launched three new phones in India today, making a comeback in the smartphone market after a long hiatus. The iconic mobile phone brand’s has launched new devices were first announced in February at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona.

Nokia 3 and Nokia 5 will be offline exclusives for the consumers. While Nokia 3 is available from 16 June while the pre-bookings for Nokia 5 will begin on 7 July. The company has tied up with Amazon for the sale of Nokia 6 exclusively. The registrations for the sale of will begin on 16 July.

Market position and challenges

A look at the spec sheet above indicates that the phones don’t have any extraordinary specifications. The entry-level processors, the battery sizes, ports and cameras are decent at best.

Traditionally, the Nokia brand has been associated with sturdy and long-lasting phones, and that was one of the pegs of the HMD Global presentation on the new smartphones at MWC Barcelona.

The brand Nokia has huge nostalgia value in India. The recently released reincarnation of the classic feature phone, Nokia 3310, went out of stock in just a few days. However, the smartphone game has changed a lot in the intervening years. Once big Indian brands such as Micromax have dropped out of the rankings and the Chinese brands have taken over the market completely, with Xiaomi and Lenovo leading in online sales, and Oppo and Vivo posting high sales volumes at offline outlets.

HMD Global already has an offline network in place and it has been selling the 3310 exclusively through this channel. For a brand like Nokia, it will be easy to get onto multiple online sales channels too. A majority of mobile sales In India still happen in offline brick and mortar retail outlets.

If it is back in the game for the long haul, Nokia will have to deliver good phones, with nice cameras and quick software updates. All of which will be relatively easy with just three phones in the market, but as Nokia launches more phones its approach to business will be keenly watched.

Ajey Mehta, HMD Global’s India VP, had announced earlier that all Nokia phones will be made in India in partnership with Foxconn. Local manufacturing had become an issue for Xiaomi — currently the phone-maker with the second highest sales figures in India — as, earlier on, it used to import most of its devices. Despite the high demand, Xiaomi had to rely on flash sales to sell its phones. With its phones being produced locally, Nokia shouldn’t face this problem.

It now remains to be seen how Nokia’s immense nostalgia value will shape its future in India and how the brand will reinvent itself.

Apple Introduces iMac Pro, Refreshes Mac Lineup And iPad Pro

Apple on Monday launched a bunch of refinements in its all four platforms — tvOS, watchOS, macOS and iOS — at this years annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) with iOS 11, watchOS 4 and updates to its Mac line of desktops and notebooks.

The event started with Apple CEO welcoming the audience at the 15th WWDC in San Jose, the heart of Silicon Valley where Apple is building its new campus.

Before making the announcements, Cook said that this year “it is going to be the best and biggest WWDC ever.”

Cook also praised the Apple developer community which has 16 million registered developers and added three million last year.

He announced that Amazon’s video app will come to Apple’s TV streaming box later this year. The app will let users stream all the Amazon original hits.

Soon after the announcement Amazon tweeted, “You asked (a lot). We listened. Amazon Prime Video is coming to the TV App and all Apple TVs this year.”

Apple also announced that watchOS 4, the next version of its smartwatch platform, will be arriving in September. It includes new features for watchfaces, such as complications updating based on time of day or location and a new Siri-based watchface.

The Siri watchface uses machine learning to determine what information is most useful to you at a given point in time.

Other new watchfaces include a kaleidoscope and new characters such as Woody, Jesse, and Buzz from the Toy Story movie franchise.

WatchOS 4 will also bring updates to the watch’s fitness tracking, including a new user interface for the workout app and new integrations with gym equipment manufacturers.

Apple said that watch wearers will be able to link their devices with the gym equipment through NFC.

Next up in tech is Apple’s new version of macOS is called High Sierra which is launched with new Safari browser.

Apple said that it is the fastest browser ever with features like autoplay blocking, intelligent tracking prevention that uses machine learning to block irritating content.

Apple also brought file system and virtual reality (VR) to High Sierra.

The tech titan also announced updates to its entire MacBook line giving its laptops more powerful specifications in the form of the latest Intel chips.

MacBook Pros will be shipped with Intel’s Kaby Lake processors and faster SSDs. The company also launched a new configuration of the 13-inch MacBook Pro without a Touch Bar that starts at a cheaper $1,299.

The newly updated MacBook laptops are now available.

Called as “the most powerful Mac ever, the new product will be available from December starting at $4,999.

The new machine will come with an 8-core Xeon processor, with configurations that scale up to an 18-core Xeon processor and an all-new AMD Radeon Vega graphics GPU, up to 16GB of VRAM and up to 4TB for SSD storage.

Cook also launched iOS 11 with over 10 new features. He said that iOS 10 had nearly 96 per cent satisfaction with 86 per cent iPhone users installing the update as compared to only seven per cent Android users who installed Android Nougat – the latest version of Google’s operating system.

The new iOS will now synchronize messages across iOS and macOS automatically. If a user erases a message on your iPhone or iPad, that will be reflected on the Mac as well.

Apple also made improvements to Siri including making the assistant’s voice sound more natural when responding to users.

Siri will now be able to perform translations in various languages including English, Chinese, French, German, Italian and Spanish.

iOS 11 Beta 1 vs iOS 10.3.2 Speed Test Comparision: Is iOS 11 Slower?

Software updates tend to get users excited for a number of reasons. Mainly because they expect to see a handful of features that weren’t present before. But many users out there, are more interested in what the new software brings in the speed or performance department.

iOS 11 Beta 1 vs iOS 10.3.2 Speed Test Comparision Is iOS 11 Slower.

Take iOS 11, the latest version of iOS, for instance. When Apple unveiled iOS 11 earlier this week at WWDC, it did not tout any speed or performance improvements with the OS. It only discussed the improvements made to the overall OS with the addition of few new features and enhancements to existing features to make them even better to use. But does iOS 11 offer more to the user in terms of performance when compared to iOS 10.3.2?

Well, speed test videos comparing iOS 11 beta 1 to iOS 10.3.2 on the iPhone 5s, iPhone 6 and iPhone 6s by YouTuber iAppleBytes shows just how well, or how badly the new software performs. Doing tests in isolation are no fun though, so the same devices were also tested with iOS 10.3.2 final version in order to get a base mark for how each class of iPhone can perform.

Here are the speed test comparison videos between iOS 11 beta 1 and iOS 10.3.2. Which one is faster on iPhone and iPad?

Speed test videos comparing iOS 11 beta 1 to iOS 10.3.2 on iPhone 6S shows that the first beta of iOS 11 is incredibly slow. The bootup times on the upcoming version of the OS is incredibly slow, with app launching times and navigating around the operating system also taking a hit. Even benchmark scores are less than ideal when compared to the same iPhone running iOS 10.3.2.

The iOS 11 beta 1 performs poorly even on older iOS devices like the iPhone 6 and iPhone 5s.

Well, it’s important to remember at this point that this is the first beta release of iOS 11. Given that, improvements tend to arrive once we are two to three betas into the release cycle, only then things start to seem more polished. Nonetheless, expect something good from the software as it hits public channels in a few weeks or sooner.

25 Incredible Things You Didn’t Know Your iPhone Could Do

The iPhone is the most popular type of cell phone in the world. Despite the fact that millions own an iPhone, many are unaware of some of the most amazing features hidden away in this little device. Even though we use our iPhones all day every day, there are still a handful of features that are relatively unknown.

Here’s a list of simple shortcuts to streamline your day and help you get the most out of your iPhone. While you might know about a handful of these, several should surprise you.

#1 Send Audio and Video Messages that Self-destruct:

You can send audio snippets and video messages that expire after two minutes. If you head to Settings > Messages and scroll to the bottom, you’ll notice a section for audio and video messages. You can choose to let them expire after two minutes or never.

Send Audio and Video messages that self destruct

#2 You can set your phone to perform certain actions when triple clicking the home button:

Within the accessibility settings, there’s an option at the very bottom of the page called “Accessibility Shortcut.” From there, you can program your home button to activate zoom, assisted touch, voice over controls, and other features with a triple click.

Triple Click-iphone featute

#3 It has a built in back button.

Unlike a lot of android phones, the iPhone has no dedicated back button. To essentially achieve the same effect, however, just swipe your finger from the left edge of your screen to the right. It’ll take you back to the page you were previously on.

#4 Respond to texts without unlocking your phone

You can respond to texts directly from your lock screen by pulling down on the notification drawer and swiping over to the left on the text notification. You’ll see a “Reply” option, and tapping it will let you type a response without having to unlock your iPhone.

#5 Respond to texts while you’re in an app

If you’re in an app, you can swipe down from the top and access the notification drawer to answer a text the same way you would on the lock screen.

#6 Close more than one app at a time:

You can close multiple apps at a time by swiping up with two or three fingers.

#7 Siri can learn

Okay, okay, so everyone knows about Siri. Siri knows too much for her own good. Well, you have the ability to teach her even more.

You can also teach Siri how to pronounce words. Whenever Siri mispronounces a word, just say, “That’s not how you pronounce “_____” and she’ll offer you alternatives. You can select the proper one, and Siri will remember it. Make sure you use her pronunciation so that she knows which word you’re talking about.

Teach Siri how to pronounce words

#8 Use SIRI Wisely

However, she actually can come in pretty useful for things you might not think about. If you’re lying in bed and too lazy to set your alarm, just tell her to do it and she will.

Siri is more useful than most give her credit for. One of the other things she can do is read your e-mail, which can be a godsend if you’re driving or otherwise occupied. Just ask something like “read my latest e-mail.” You can even ask if you’ve received a message from a specific person, and Siri will check and read them aloud if you did.

Siri can read your e-mail for you

If you just received a text or email but can’t take the time to read it right now, you can ask Siri to remind you later on. When you receive the notification, just ask Siri to remind you to read it later. This works with Messages, Mail, Notes, and Safari as long as your iPhone is running iOS 9.

#9 You can change Siri’s Gender.

Tired of the same old Siri? Go to settings > general > Siri, and scroll down to “voice gender.” Here you can give Siri a male voice.

It can change Siri’s gender.

#10 Use Siri hands-free

You don’t always have to hold down the home button to launch Siri. If you have the new iPhone 6S, just say the phrase “Hey Siri” to launch Apple’s virtual assistant (any phones older than the iPhone 6S must be plugged into a power outlet for this feature to work). Just head over to Settings > General > Siri and turn on “Enable Hey Siri” first.

Use Siri hands free

#11 Control your iPhone by simply moving your head

This is the feature buried in the Accessibility section. Navigate to Settings > General > Accessibility and then scroll down to the “Interaction” subhead and tap “Switch Control.” Tap “Switches” and “Add New Switch.” Select “Camera” and choose “Left Head Movement” or “Right Head Movement.” Then pick an action under the “System” menu, which essentially tells you what task your head movement, will trigger. I chose Siri, so each time I tilt my head to the left it automatically launches Siri.

Control your iphone by simply moving your head

#12 View every photo someone has texted you, and vice versa

There’s an easy way to view every photo and video you’ve sent someone. Just open the messaging thread in the “Messages” app and press the “Details” button in the upper right corner.

View every photo someone has texted you, and vice versa

#13 Save battery by putting your phone in grayscale mode

If you’re running low on juice and just need basic functionality from your iPhone, try switching it to grayscale mode to save power. Just head to Settings > General > Accessibility and tap “Grayscale.”

Save your battery by using grayscale mode

#14 Access emergency medical information directly from the lock screen

If you set up a Medical ID in the Health app that comes with iOS 8, you can access medical information without having to unlock your iPhone. Tap the “Emergency” button that appears with the keypad for entering your passcode and you’ll see the Medical ID button on the lower left corner.

Access emergency medical information directly from the lock screen

#15 Multitask within emails

If you’re in the middle of an email, you don’t need to trash it to return to your inbox and browse other messages. As you’re composing an email, simply tap the top of the message where it says either “New Message” or the subject and drag it down to the bottom of the screen. This will push the message to the bottom so you can look at other emails. When you want to return, simply tap the email to keep editing it.

#16 Mute text messages

You can mute text message notifications for individual contacts and conversations. Just head over to your messaging thread and switch the “Do Not Disturb.”

#17 See who’s calling you even if a phone number isn’t in your contacts

With iOS 9, Apple added a new feature that displays the possible name of an unknown caller. If you’re receiving a phone call from someone you’ve emailed, and that person’s email address is associated with his or her phone number, it’ll pop up as a suggestion when he or she calls you.

See who's calling you even if a phone number isn't in your contacts

#18 Share your current location with a friend

If you don’t feel like explaining where you are, you can simply send your location to another person via text message. Just tap the “Details” button in the upper right corner of your message thread and select “Send My Location.”

Share your current location with friend

#19 Let your friends track where you go

If you want your friends or a family member to be able to track you as you move, you can complete the same steps mentioned in the previous slide and choose the “Share My Location” instead of “Send My Location.” You can choose to share your location for one hour, until the end of the day, or indefinitely.

Let your friends track where you go

#20 Have Siri read anything

You can enable Siri to read articles on websites, books, text messages, and more thanks to one of the iPhone’s lesser-known accessibility features. Head over to Settings > General > Accessibility > Speech. Then turn on Speak Screen and Speak Selection. Now, when you swipe down from the top of the screen with two fingers, Siri will dictate the content of whatever is on the screen.

Have siri read anything

#21 Easily navigate the big-screen iPhones

If you’re using the iPhone 6 Plus or iPhone 6S Plus with one hand, you can double tap the home button to move the content down toward the bottom of the screen. Apple calls this “Reachability Mode.” Remember to tap the home button, don’t press it or else it’ll launch the app switcher.

Easily navigate the big-screen iPhones

#22 Launch a music app just by plugging in your earbuds

If you listen to music at the same time every morning, your iPhone will automatically know that it should launch the music app as soon as you plug your headphones in. This is another feature that’s new with iOS 9.

Launch a music app just by plugging in your earbuds

#23 Search for anything in the Settings menu

You no longer have to dig through the iPhone’s settings menu to find what you’re looking for. If your iPhone is updated to iOS 9, you’ll notice there’s a search bar at the top of the settings menu that helps you quickly jump to any given setting.

Search for anything in settings menu

#24 Undo Typo with a simple shake of your iPhone

If you make a mistake while writing an email, editing a photo, or texting, simply shake your phone and this will show up and allow you to edit easily. It is much like an etch-a-sketch, or control-Z on a PC, it’ll erase the last thing you did.

delete your mistakes with a simple shake

#25 View Timestamps:

It can tell you exactly when you received a text message. This is a useful feature, mainly because it’s nice to know how long ago somebody sent you a message. To access it, simply swipe to the left in any text conversation you have. You’ll then be able to see the exact time that texts were sent and delivered.

iOS 11 Takes Less Storage Space Compared To iOS 10. It Will Help Increase Storage Capacity

Apple has announced the key features, major upgrades and improvements of iOS 11 on stage, but the company didn’t mention the smaller refinements made to the iOS 11. Here is one such small refinement which really makes the platform pop, but Apple didn’t mention it on the stage. It is the fact that iOS 11 seems to take up less storage space on installed devices, compared to iOS 10.

How To Enable Dark Mode On iOS 11 - Smart Invert Feature (1)

We have already discussed in our previous articles about the redesigned storage management system in iOS 11, which makes it easy to view storage consumption in greater detail on your iPhone — and even easier to free up storage space with surgical precision. In the updated storage management system, Apple now gives you recommendations on ways to free up space on your iPhone, like auto-deleting old conversations in Messages, emptying your “Recently Deleted” album in Photos, or storing your messages in iCloud.

Now, what if we say that rather than actually bloating the platform and claiming additional space, iOS 11 actually has some intelligent engineering within it to actually save space, resulting in the user getting more of that precious device capacity back for the installation of additional apps, updates, new iOS versions,  or storage of photos and videos? Really an interesting update isn’t it!

iOS 11 Takes Less Storage Space Compared To iOS 10. It Will Help Increase Storage Capacity1

Here is a side-by-side comparison between iOS 10 and iOS 11 on a 16GB iPhone 6s, which shows that the user is left with 12.23 GB of available storage space on iOS 10, but 12.78 GB on a device running iOS 11.

We are not saying that it’s going to instantly provide gigabytes of device storage back to users, but every little storage space helps for those iPhone owners who are on the entry-level 16GB version of the hardware. The mileage will definitely vary though depending on device model and storage capacity.

Apple has been criticised for not changing the design of their phones over the past few years, but the new design suggests that it is going to go through a complete revamp with the iPhone 8. As Apple marks the 10th anniversary of the iPhone, we can expect the Cupertino giant to launch three iPhone models this year. There was a rumour that the new iPhone 8 will have a glass back and a stainless-steel bezel. From the picture that was recently leaked, the information is very accurate.

The picture also shows us that the iPhone 8 will definitely have a dual rear camera like the iPhone7Plus and the display will be near bezel-free. These two features clearly confirm that Apple is going to make a significant change when compared to the iPhone 7/7Plus.

An Apple Supplier Has Confirmed That The Next iPhone Will Have Wireless Charging

Apple Supplier Leaked Next iPhone to Have Wireless Charging

We all have been waiting for the next iPhone to launch and we can expect some major and minor changes from the upcoming Apple device. However, there is one feature that has been requested for a very long time and one of Apple’s major supplier has just confirmed it.

Robert Hwang, CEO of Wiston, the company responsible for assembling iPhones was speaking at the company’s annual shareholders’ meet. Nikkei reports that Hwang let slip one feature that was tight lip up until now. He said, “Assembly process for the previous generations of [iPhones] have not changed much, though new features like waterproof and wireless charging now require some different testing.”

Wireless charging has been one of the most requested features by fans and iPhone 8’s shift to an all glass back was long suspected to be the reason to support the new charging system. However, this information remained to be speculated until now as this is the first time there is any sort of official confirmation. Hwang’s statement can also be further analysed to conclude that wireless charging will not be exclusive to the iPhone 8 as it may also be featured on the iPhone 7s and iPhone 7s Plus.

Apple Supplier Leaked Next iPhone to Have Wireless Charging© YouTube

Hwang also suggested from his statement that the next iPhones are also going to be water proof and the contact based wireless charging will not involve any ports. However, as a displeasure to our expectations, the wireless charging will not be long range after all as the idea was abandoned by Apple earlier this year.

The iPhone 8 is going to be the most expensive iPhone of all time and the addition of wireless charging maybe yet another added cost to justify the increase in price. Apple is expected to use OLED for display and a touch ID that may be embedded under the screen which has increased the cost of production.  Further increase in the price can be attributed to the “3D sensing technology” that will be an integral feature of the front facing camera.

Verizon-Yahoo Merger’s New Plan Starts With 2,100 Layoffs

Ethan Miller/Getty Images
It’s the job of Verizon’s Marni Walden to figure out how to make Yahoo and AOL work together.

With the $4.5 billion deal officially closed, changes at the telecom giant’s new division Oath are expected to come swiftly.

It has been more than a year since Verizon first announced its plan to acquire Yahoo for more than $4 billion, but with the deal finally closed Tuesday, changes at the telecom giant are expected to come swiftly.

First up: layoffs of about 15 percent of staff at both Yahoo and AOL — affecting about 2,100 employees in primarily administration and support positions — as part of the merger of the internet acquisitions into a new division dubbed Oath. “They’re going to hit the ground running,” says Macquarie analyst Amy Yong. “They have a clear vision for what they want to do.”

Oath CEO Tim Armstrong said on CNBC’s Squawk Box on Wednesday morning that the layoffs are “mainly focused on us putting more resources toward the front end, towards the consumer side” and confirmed that they are taking place this week.

Some of the first cuts have hit HuffPost, the news site started by Arianna Huffington and later sold to AOL. The publication reported on its own layoffs on Wednesday, indicating that 39 people had been let go. HuffPost‘s Washington bureau was especially impacted, with six journalists laid off, among them senior military correspondent David Wood, who won a Pulitzer Prize for the outlet in 2012. Huffington left the publication last August. Lydia Polgreen became editor-in-chief of HuffPost this year. An AOL spokeswoman declined to comment on layoffs at specific Oath brands.

Several high-profile Yahoo names are departing, including CEO Marissa Mayer, who announced her resignation. Katie Couric, Mayer’s biggest talent hire, is staying on for now, but her long-term plans are undetermined.

Verizon agreed to pay $4.8 billion for Yahoo in July 2016. But the telecom company pumped the breaks on the deal last fall after Yahoo disclosed that it had previously been the target of two massive security breaches, one of which affected more than 1 billion user accounts. Ultimately, Verizon decided to move forward with the deal but sliced $350 million off Yahoo’s purchase price.

The legacy internet giant has been an important piece of a content strategy that Verizon has been building up as it looks to find ways to expand its business beyond offering cellphone, internet and TV plans to consumers. Verizon wasn’t known as a buyer of programming until a few years ago, when it struck a deal to stream NFL games to mobile subscribers and then launched ad-supported app go90, giving it a more robust library of video against which it can sell ads.

Oath, which is being led by CEO Tim Armstrong and will combine HuffPost, TechCrunch and Yahoo’s brands, now will be key to the telecom’s efforts to distribute that content across platforms. It could also be an effective platform on which to test new over-the-top video offerings. With the combination of AOL and Yahoo, the new unit has an audience of more than 1 billion, with a goal to reach 2 billion by 2020.

“AOL was a very effective ad platform,” Verizon president Marni Walden, the executive in charge of the integration, told investors last Thursday. “The challenge was, they didn’t have enough scale. Yahoo gives us that opportunity.”

Through The Phone: An Artist Incorporates His Phone Into Our Everyday Surroundings

Edited images with a hint of the surreal incorporate the ubiquitous smartphone to the images captured by the device in the series ‘Through the Phone’ by Asmo Turunen.

“Just very basic quick snapshots, right? These are my little bit more edited creations and I kinda like that ‘through the phone’ effect as you can see. It gives more dimension and people have to watch and think like, wait what’s going on in this picture? When I was creating these I had to also stop and think what I’m doing. But it’s just a good sign! Hope you like them!” Asmo told Bored Panda.

Just Like Everything Else From The Free World, Pakistan Banned These Video Games & Here’s Why

Pakistan Banned This Game and Here’s Why

Way back in 2013 when the ‘Call of Duty’ games was the best selling game, Pakistan decided to ban the game for reasons that we are all too used to hearing. A declaration was made that the country had forbidden the sales of Activision’s ‘Call of Duty’ games and EA’s ‘Medal of Honor’ series.

Pakistan Banned This Game and Here's Why© Electronic Arts

It was discovered by shopkeepers that Pakistan was portrayed in an offensive manner due to which the game was banned. The organisation that controlled sales of digital media in the country said the following:

“The Association has always boycotted these types of films and games. These (games) have been developed against the country’s national unity and sanctity. The games (‘Medal of Honor: Warfighter’ and ‘Call of Duty: Black Ops II’) have been developed against Pakistan, and the association has completely banned their sale. Shopkeepers are warned and will be responsible for the consequences if found purchasing or selling these games.”

Pakistan Banned This Game and Here's Why© Activision

Pakistan was ready to punish people who were willing to sell these games and we feel that it was kind of expected.  These games featured a sequence that was set in Pakistan and some moments portrayed Pakistan as a country which sponsors terrorism and is a hotbed for such activities. To be fair, they weren’t that far from the truth. This obviously did not sit well with sellers and Saleem Memon, head of the All Pakistan CD, DVD, Audio Cassette Traders and Manufacturers Association (APCDACTM) said, “These games are an effort to malign the minds of youth against Pakistan.”

Haha, because real life terrorist activities don’t, right?

It was even restricted to sell this game in U.S. military bases because it was revealed that players could play as the Taliban in the multiplayer mode. Till date, it is not possible for Pakistani citizens to purchase this game; however, we have seen people from Pakistan playing the game in the multiplayer mode. It can be assumed that these games were acquired through illegal means or purchased in different countries.

We never thought a video game would become the centre of attention for illegal activities.  India has also had their fair share of banning games such as ‘Dragon Age Inquisition’ (Because of gay characters), ‘Overwatch’ (trivialised Hinduism’s highly revered goddesses) and ‘Pokemon Go’ (eggs are considered non-vegetarian and blasphemous in places of worship).

Sony Proved At Their E3 Conference That More Games Is Better Than Getting A New Console

Sony at E3 2017: All The Announcements

While Xbox may have launched the most powerful gaming console yet, it left us a little underwhelmed due to the lack of new games the new Xbox One X has to offer. Sony’s E3 presentation was packed with new and already announced games. Most of the trailers and news looked exciting and the company had a few interesting surprises up their sleeves. Here is what Sony is up to the year:

New ‘Days Gone’  Trailer

Sony announced the fast-paced zombie shooter last year, however,  they showed off a new 7-minute long gameplay segment this year that left us wanting more. Contrary to the previous gameplay trailer, this one had a slower pace and involved some stealth. It also showed that players can take advantage of mindless hordes of zombies and other gameplay features that were not yet known. Sony did not reveal a concrete release date but we are mighty excited for this game to hit the shelves as soon as possible.

New ‘Uncharted’  Cinematic Trailer

This is the first ‘Uncharted’ game that will not star Nathan Drake and will take us on a new adventure where players will be looking for the tusk of Ganesh. The game is not a far cry from the series as we see the return of Chloe Frazer (Uncharted 2) and Nadine Ross (Uncharted 4) who are going to be the leading characters for this game. Much like the previous ‘Uncharted’  games, “Lost Legacy” will involve some sort of mythical ancient treasure that needs retrieving.

‘Shadow Of The Colossus’ (Re-Remake)

This game has a cult following every since the original released on the PlayStation 2. The game was remastered way back in 2011 and it seems like Sony is not done with the game yet. The game will receive a proper HD remake and will release on the PlayStation 4 in 2018.

‘God Of War’  New Trailer

The new ‘God Of War’ game is a complete rework from the original series and this time the game introduces Kratos’ son Atreus to the series. The new trailer adds to the previous trailer that was revealed last year and shows more of the hack and slash action we all are accustomed to. The game has new finishing moves as well and it ended with an uncertain release date i.e. “early 2018”

First Look Of The New ‘Spider-Man’ Game

Sony always ends their conference with a bang and they did just that with a new gameplay trailer of Insomniac’s upcoming ‘Spider-Man’ game. The new iteration of the superhero game involves fast-paced combat and acrobatic action. The game also has a brand new open-world setting and it’s massive when compared to previous games. You can control Spidey in various ways, slinging your way all over the city or fighting enemies with deadly combos. The game is exclusive to the PlayStation 4 and is expected to release in 2018.

Michelin Just Made A Bike Lighting System That Protects Cyclists From Traffic Inside Its Ring Of Red Light

Night time bike rides can be a thrilling experience instead of a terrifying one if you take appropriate safety measures. French tire manufacturer Michelin has created a lighting device for bicycles that could become a vital piece of gear for any two-wheeled nightcrawler.

Bikesphere constantly analyzes the area around the cyclist and warns him if traffic intensity changes. Its proximity sensor detects an approaching vehicle, and if the car gets too close, the system will automatically activate two rapidly revolving lasers to shield the bike with a red halo. This alerts the cyclist about an approaching vehicle and drastically increases his visibility.

During the day, Bikesphere preserves energy and works as a regular headlamp. Michelin developed this genius device as part of its #TrendyDrivers initiative that seeks to reduce accidents on the road. The company also plans to make the system open source so every user can custom-build their own version of Bikesphere and provide tips for others on how to improve the initial design to best fit their cycling habits and needs.

The OnePlus 5’s Price In India May Have Been Leaked Ahead Of Its Launch And It Is Exactly What We Expected

Oneplus 5

OnePlus 5 is one of the most anticipated smartphones this summer and the company has already gone public with the dual lens camera that has been rumoured before the launch. While many of the details may have been under speculation, OnePlus has been releasing information to the world in little bits.

However, True-tech claims that they got a tip from a “viable” source that indicated the pricing structure for the upcoming flagship smartphone. The website details that there will be two variants launching in India where the 6GB RAM/64GB internal storage variant will be priced at Rs 32,999 and the 8GBRAM/128 GB Storage variant will cost Rs 37,999.

OnePlus 5(c) OnePlus

In lieu of the rumours surrounding the OnePlus 5, the company has not confirmed any of the claims by the website or any other details that have surfaced so far. The smartphone is already confirmed to have Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835 SoC and will have a 5.5-inch screen with a resolution of 2550X1440.

OnePlus is known for offering smartphones that have specifications with fidelity at par with most flagship smartphones at a reasonable price. However, if this rumour is considered to be true, OnePlus is now playing a field where smartphones generally sell for premium price tags. OnePlus’s deviation from their strategy may upset fans however, one can expect a great smartphone from the company that is still cheaper than other flagship smartphones.

OnePlus(c) OnePlus 5

The higher price may be credited to Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835 processor and when compared to OnePlus 3T’s Rs 29,999 price tag, we can safely say that OnePlus is gradually increasing the price of their smartphones. The OnePlus 5 will launch on 22nd June 2017 in Mumbai and we can’t wait to spill all the details for you.

Microsoft Unveils The Most Powerful Gaming Console Yet And It’s Called The Xbox One X

Microsoft let the world know what they were working on and they finally unveiled the Xbox One X at E3 last night that was previously dubbed as “Project Scorpio”. The console was teased at last year’s E3 and we finally got to see last night what Microsoft had in store for us. The new console is significantly more powerful than the PlayStation 4 Pro and it has the capability to run games at 4k/60 frames per second. Microsoft announced the new console for $499 (INR 32,100).

E3 2017: Microsoft Unveils Xbox One X© Microsoft

We also got to see what the console will look like and it looks very similar to the Xbox One but it has a slimmer base and looks like a tweak from the Xbox One S design. The company claims that the Xbox One X is their smallest console ever.

You can have a look at the reveal below:

The Xbox One X has a customer 8-core AMD CPU which clocks at 2.3GHz, it has a 6 teraflop GPU that clock in at 1.17GHz and has 12GB of GDDR5 video RAM. The console is capable of 4K/HDR gaming and also has support for Dolby Atmos. If a gamer does not own a 4K TV, the Xbox One X will make still enhance games in 1080p thanks to the extra horsepower under the hood.

E3 2017: Microsoft Unveils Xbox One X© Microsoft

The Xbox One X will also have a 4K Blu-ray drive, which is still not supported by the PS4 Pro. The console is compatible with every Xbox One game and accessory as the console will also be compatible with the Xbox One.

Since the console is packed with the latest components for consoles, Microsoft developed a liquid-cooling vapour chamber to keep the Xbox One X’s hardware from overheating. The liquid-cooling system is a common feature on PC gaming hardware, but it’s a first for any console. This was included to avoid a repeat of Xbox 360’s infamous Red Ring of Death.

E3 2017: Microsoft Unveils Xbox One X© Microsoft

The new console will also have new games that will run on the platform with 4K/60FPS graphics. The Forza MotorSport 7 will be one of the launch titles for the consoles and based on the demo we can finally say that the environments look more realistic than before.

Games that will be supported by Xbox OneX will have “Xbox One X Enhanced” printed on the cover art, just like games that are built for the PlayStation 4 Pro. This signifies that the games will still run on Xbox One and One S. However, they will have fewer visual effects and slower performance.

E3 2017: Microsoft Unveils Xbox One X© Microsoft

The Xbox One X will have numerous launch title support such as State Of Decay 2, Dragonball Fighter Z, Deep Rock Galactic and other games that are slated to launch this year and early 2018. The new games will make a huge difference as Microsoft has been suffering because of the lack of exclusive games for the Xbox One. Being the most powerful console, Microsoft will need games that can be played on the console as it wouldn’t mean much if gamers don’t have new content for the console.

Experiment Reveals The Difference Between Pro Photographers Using $500 Gear VS. Amateur Using $4,950 Gear

Experiment Reveals The Difference Between Pro Photographers Using $500 Gear VS. Amateur Using $4,950 Gear

Tired of constantly being asked ‘what camera did you use to take that photo?’ and ‘what is the best camera?’ photographers at Mango Street decided to show the difference between pro photographers with amateur gear and an amateur with pro gear.

They gave a high-end $3,300 Canon 5D Mark IV with a $1,650 Canon 35mm f/1.4L II lens to their friend who is not a pro, but had a basic understanding of photography. Meanwhile, the two professional photographers got a cheap (~$500) Canon Rebel T3i with low-end lenses (a kit 18-55mm and a 40mm f/2.8 pancake lens).

See the results below.

Google Pixel 2 Leak Suggests It Will Aggressively Challenge Apple And Samsung With These 2 Features

Smartphone companies are known to borrow features from each other. Case in point, the OnePlus 5 leak suggests that it looks almost identical to the iPhone 7 Plus. However, a new leak suggests that the Google Pixel 2 will also borrow a few ideas from two other companies. It is rumoured that the Google Pixel 2 will borrow the dual camera setup from the iPhone 7 Plus and a bezel-less infinity style screen from Samsung’s S8.

Google Pixel 2 Leak Suggests It Will Borrow Feature From Apple And Samsung© Twitter

The second iteration of Google Pixel is slated to be announced later this summer and we really loved the first generation. In fact, we think it has the best camera on any smartphone and even DxO gave it a score of 89/100. Google remains in the lead when it comes to camera technology and software manipulation and we can’t wait to see if the new iteration will challenge the revered iPhone 8 and the Galaxy S8.

The Pixel may just feature a dual camera which will function as two lenses capable of taking “wide” and “telephoto” pictures. The dual camera on the iPhone 7 Plus has extremely good zoom capabilities and we hope Google follows suit as it would be a great addition to their smartphones.

Android Headlines, reports that the Google Pixel will have Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 836 under the hood but it may change when we closer to the final launch date. The Google Pixel will have at least 4GB of RAM in order for it to function effectively and it won’t be surprising if they bump that up for the Pixel XL.

Google Pixel 2 Leak Suggests It Will Borrow Feature From Apple And Samsung© Pinterest

The Google Pixel already sports an amazing OLED screen and it won’t be too far-fetched if Google follows the same path as Samsung to give us an “infinity” style display. This, in theory, will remove the top and bottom bezels to give a seamless experience many users are already loving on the Galaxy S8.

Google’s Pixel appeals to an enthusiastic crowd that really want the exclusive Android experience and the numbers are only growing. The first Pixel was well received amongst reviewers and users alike and it will be very interesting to see how Google will up the ante in 2017.

Shocking Yourself v/s Being Left Alone With Your Thoughts

How often have you lamented that you need more alone time? Meeting one social requirement after another means even the happiest social butterfly needs some alone time to wind down. It is interesting however that for many people, alone time is spent doing activities or distracting themselves. Of course, without activities and distractions, what can people do? A study conducted by Timothy Wilson and his colleagues inspected just that. Most people don’t like to be left alone with their thoughts, and according to the study, people would prefer to shock themselves rather than think.

The researchers recruited hundreds of volunteers to take part in “thinking session” for their study. The individuals were placed in furnished rooms and did not have any of their belongings with them. Each participant was given one of two tests that lasted 6-15 minutes: some were told to think about whatever they wanted, and some were given prompts for their thoughts, such as going out to eat or playing a sport. After this, the participants were asked to rate their experiences on a 9-point scale, where the higher the number was, the more enjoyable the time was. In both scenarios, 50% of the people reported mid-level to low scores on their enjoyment, and rated high scores for boredom. The researchers then changed the location of the study, and participants were asked to do the same “thinking” task in the comfort of their house. However, the results remained the same. The participants also stated that they enjoyed activities like listening to music or reading a book twice as much as thinking. In the final leg of the research, participants were placed in a  lab room for 15 minutes. The room contained a button that participants could push to shock themselves if they wanted to. Even though the same participants that had reported that they would pay money to avoid being shocked, 67% of the men and 25% of the women chose to inflict the shock upon themselves in order to avoid sitting and thinking quietly. Though the shocking could be mixed with the signs of boredom, these results are actually quite surprising.

This could be because most people don’t actually know how to control their thoughts. We have an array of thoughts to choose from: pleasant memories from the past, hopes and dreams of our future, and even an extremely active imagination that lets us create worlds and scenarios of our own. In this way, we have the capacity to entertain ourselves without any external devices. However, when left alone, our mind wanders to the negatives rather than the positives. As we reach adolescence and beyond, we can become overwhelmed with difficulties and challenges that can upset us and take a toll on our mental health. They can cause a lot of anxiety and pain which are emotions we naturally want to avoid. Once we find a way to do that, such as immersing ourselves in a movie or a T.V show, we stick to it as a coping mechanism. If we are upset about a fight with a friend, for example, we tune out the negative emotions by watching T.V. If we are left to our own thoughts without any distractions, we tend to upheave emotions that we have been avoiding.

Another reason could be that distractions have become a habit. Activities like self-reflection and introspection have taken a back seat because there is so much entertainment available for us. New advancements in technology have brought about devices like Virtual Reality, there are constant developments in video games, there are countless movies and T.V shows to access on platforms like Netflix and Hulu. When given a choice to do nothing or entertain yourself, most people choose the entertainment. This means that finding healthy ways to engage in your thoughts is necessary. Entertainment can be great, but taking alone time to sort your thoughts out can foster healthy coping methods and improve your creativity. It also gives your brain a break from the constant sensory overload. Meditation and mindfulness are some wonderful ways you can train your mind to control and refine thoughts.
